چکیده

Herbicide tolerant (HT) crops are not a new phenomenon – in fact, all crops are to some extent tolerant to herbicides. Many herbicides are dose-specific for particular plant groups, for example grasses, and these can be used on broad-leaved crops like potatoes and oilseed rape without causing unacceptable harm. This is the basis for most current agricultural practice in developed countries. Genetic modification, however, has enabled crops to be made resistant to concentrations of ‘broad-spectrum’ herbicides that have a mode of action that is lethal to all conventional crops and wild plants. Examples of broadspectrum herbicides to which GM plants have been made resistant are glyphosate and glufosinate-ammonium. These herbicides, particularly glyphosate, are already regularly used by farmers in the UK to ‘clean up’ weedy stubbles and to desiccate crops such as potatoes and oilseed rape before harvest.

Sensitive dependencies and separation distances for genetically modified herbicide-tolerant crops.

The amount of land available for the coexistent growing of both organic and genetically modified herbicide-tolerant (GMHT) crops depends on the separation distance between the two types of crop. The form of the decline in the proportion of land available for growing one of these crop types due to increasing separation distance is linear on a suitable scale, but with a slope and intercept that a...

Environmental Impact of Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs)

The intensification of agriculture has provided cheaper more plentiful food, but has also caused declines in farmland wildlife. The introduction of genetically modified (GM) crops may exacerbate this, or offer new ways of mitigating anthropogenic impacts. The potential consequences of the introduction of GM crops have been studied for over a decade, since commercialization. Although the specifi...

Managing the Footprint of Agriculture: Towards a Comparative Assessment of Risks and Benefits for Novel Agricultural Systems

This report has been drawn up by a subgroup of the Advisory Committee on Releases to the Environment (ACRE) in response to requests by the Secretary of State and the Agriculture and Environment Biotechnology Commission to assess the wider implications of the Farm-Scale Evaluations (FSEs) of genetically modified herbicide tolerant (GMHT) crops. ACRE's remit is currently limited to GMOs and the r...

GMOs: A Good but Battered Means for Sustainable Production Intensification

FAO promotes Sustainable Production Intensification (SPI), which consists of a technology menu for optimizing crop production per unit area, taking into consideration the range of sustainability aspects including potential and/or real social, political, economic and environmental impacts. The author suggests that Genetically Modified Organism (GMO) cropping is not only well aligned to SPI but a...

Crop management and agronomic context of the Farm Scale Evaluations of genetically modified herbicide-tolerant crops.

The Farm Scale Evaluations of genetically modified herbicide-tolerant crops (GMHT) were conducted in the UK from 2000 to 2002 on beet (sugar and fodder), spring oilseed rape and forage maize. The management of the crops studied is described and compared with current conventional commercial practice. The distribution of field sites adequately represented the areas currently growing these crops, ...
